Town on Grand River established by William Dickson in 1816 on land purchased from the Six Nations of the Iroquois.  It was originally called Shade's Mills, but the post office established there in 1825 was called Galt in honor of John Galt, a Commissioner of the Canada Company. On 1 January 1973 it was merged with neighbouring Preston to form the city of Cambridge.
