Notes:

One of the more interesting pioneers resting [in Brick Street Cemetery] is Phoebe Schram McNames, heroine of the forgotten battle of Hungerford Hill (Reservoir Hill).

In the dying days of the War of 1812, the Kentucky Mounted Riflemen, a U.S. cavalry troop, were straggling back home through enemy territory when they chanced upon their even more battered enemy, a British militia troop returning from the Battle of Moraviantown.

The Riflemen, assuming the British were an easy target, decided to charge Hungerford Hill.

The aforesaid Phoebe, whose farner husband was away at war, could have retreated to safety, instead the spunky lady fought alongside the militia, reloading their cumbersome rifles and dodging bullets to bring water to the exhausted soldiers.

After several hours of battle, the British, by virtue of their superior position on top of the hill, emerged the victors, with not even one soldier wounded.

Unlike the war's more celebrated Laura Secord, Phoebe ... lies forgotten, her broken tombstone propped against her husband's damaged stone.
